Play Guitar in Northeast Philadelphia
You just bought your first guitar, now what?
Congratulations! You just bought your very first guitar. Now what? Intermediate and advanced players already know what to do. Pick that guitar up and get acquainted with this first addition to your collection. If this is your first guitar and first time playing, there are a few tips to help you get started on your musical journey, courtesy of David Joel Guitar Studio in Philadelphia.
The accessories
The strap, picks, and the strings. You definitely need the right pick and it is important to learn the correct way to hold it. It’s also good to be prepared with an extra set of the right strings as they do have a tendency to break. Lighter gauge strings will be easier on the fingers if you are a new player and you should test a variety of pick sizes before settling on what feels comfortable. You will also need a strap for that new guitar.
Cleaning your instrument
A little maintenance will help your guitar last longs. Sweat, dirt and other nasty things can age it faster. You need a lint-free cloth and approved cleaning products to make sure you are using the right equipment.
Storing your guitar
One thing that gets overlooked often is how to store your guitar when it isn’t in use. If you plan on playing every day, a stand or wall hanger will keep your guitar out of the way and ready to use. Otherwise, a gig bag or hard case will keep it shielded from the elements when transporting it as well as for long-term storage.
Tuning up
Whether you are using a digital tuner, a tuning app or the harmonic method, you should know how to keep your guitar in tune. You’ll never know when it will get knocked off course and sometimes it happens when you least expect it.
Start playing
It’s important that you pick up your guitar and play. After learning how to care for and prep your guitar, it’s up to you to start playing. It’s not hard to find resources online or at your local music retail that will teach you basic fundamentals of playing but in actuality, if you are a beginner, having a little help is key.
Find a teacher
Checking out local music studios or word of mouth are ways to find a teacher you can trust and learn from. Don’t feel obligated to stay with the first one you find. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t the right teacher for you. When you do find that person you can click with, the sky is the limit to what you can learn and do with your guitar.
