Learn To Play Guitar
What do you want?
I want rock and roll! If you are a beginner guitarist, there are many things you are feeling as well as things you need to know. If you are reading this article then you are probably on the road to beginning your musical journey. Learning guitar can be tricky and it’s completely normal as a beginner to have a million questions and concerns. At the David Joel Guitar Studio, we want you to understand what you are feeling is normal. Before you take guitar lessons in Philadelphia, we want to dispel some of your concerns.
Below are some commonly asked questions about learning guitar:
Am I too old to learn?
That is a resounding NO! You are never too old to learn to play guitar. This is a common concern among new players whether you are a teenager or a senior citizen. There is no age restriction on learning anything new. It doesn’t matter when you start. Playing an instrument is rewarding and a worthwhile experience that creates self-discipline, creativity, coordination, and confidence. Maybe younger players can absorb material quicker but adults are more likely to practice more.
I’m ready to learn, now what?
The first thing you need to do is find a teacher who you are comfortable with. Determine if you are more comfortable with one-on-one instruction or in a group setting. At David Joel, all of our lessons are taught privately. We believe that this gives you the individual instruction to work on your strengths and weaknesses without having to follow along to what a group is doing. Everyone works at their own pace. It’s okay when looking for a teacher to “interview” each one. It will help you determine what is best for you and your unique method of learning.
Why do my fingers hurt?
As a beginner, this is completely normal. You will improve your muscle strength in your playing arm and form calluses on your fret hand. But, the aches are short-lived if you continue to practice regularly. This is what will alleviate the pain. Just like anything, your body has to get used to it.
How can I practice efficiently?
The more practice you put into your guitar playing, the more you will get out of it. Regular practice is critical to improve your ability. What is more important is proper practice. Keep your technique in check, as this will prevent you from forming bad habits that sometimes can take years to break out of. Good posture, proper hand positioning, and stretching should always be done. It is normal to experience discomfort during your beginning practicing because it is foreign to your body. Because of this, you need to be mindful of tension and unnatural bending in your fingers and wrists.
Hopefully, some of these tips will help keep your mind focused on your guitar playing. No one starts out perfect, not even the greats. Give yourself a break in the beginning. We are happy to help you when you are beginning your playing. With proper guitar lessons in Philadelphia, you are sure to start off right!
