10 Lessons About Guitar
10 lessons about learning to play the guitar
We all have people in our lives who have taught us lessons. Whether we are learning from a parent how to parent our own kids or a teacher helping us to find our calling in life, there is always someone that we’ve looked up to and trusted in their guidance throughout our life. Having a mentor to guide us in music is no exception.
Below are some lessons that musicians have learned over their years of playing guitar that we are sure will be handy to help you with your musical goals. Consider us another mentor, and you’re welcome!
-
Slow and steady
When you first start to learn the guitar, don’t expect a miracle the first day. Don’t rush through anything. Slow down, take your time, learn the fundamentals, and only move on when you are ready.
-
Have a plan
Having a plan in place can be simple goals like learning 5 new major chords by the end of the month or learn to play one new song each month. When you set small goals, you can look back and see how far you’ve come.
-
Lessons are important
There are two ways to approach learning guitar. The first is to go blindly into the dark, teaching yourself chords, etc. The second, and better, approach is to find a teacher, take lessons, and be held accountable for your skill improvement.
-
We are all bad at first
When you learn your first chord, your first song, it is going to sound bad. But bad is good. It’s step one. When you continue, you will sound better and better. If you understand this from the start, it will help you to stay motivated as you go.
-
Hang out with musicians better than you
When you jam with others, you will see how much more you need to learn, and this is a good thing. Playing with others who are better than you will keep you motivated to keep learning.
-
Learn when to stop
If you are stuck on something and you keep going and are still trying deep into the night, you need to stop and take a step back. Let your body and your brain step away from the issue. Chances are, what you were struggling with you will be able to play the next day with no issues. Sometimes your brain just needs a little time to take things in.
-
Your fingers will hurt
Your fingers are going to hurt like hell when you first start playing. It happens for several reasons but just know, it is inevitable. The main reason is simply, it’s a rite of passage. It just happens, it means you’re a guitar player. It will go away. Eventually.
-
Keep it simple
Accessories are super fun and should be added to your guitar inventory but when you are first starting out, all you need is a decent guitar.
-
Play what you like
Chances are the reason you’re learning guitar is because you were inspired by a musician or style of music. Stick with the music that made you want to begin playing in the first place.
-
Don’t give up
Everything is going to sound awful at first. Your fingers are going to hurt. You’re not going to be an overnight success. Others are much better than you. The key is to not let any of this stop you.
