Three steps to begin learning guitar

Have you decided you want to learn how to play the guitar?  Well, congratulations!  It’s the first step to a wonderful adventure!  The guitar is a wonderful and versatile instrument that will keep you entertained for the rest of your life.  However, learning guitar for beginners can be quite overwhelming due to the sheer amount of information available.

Keep reading for three key steps you should know to begin learning the guitar.

1. Be prepared to feel foolish

Learning any instrument takes practice and, in the beginning, you will make a lot of mistakes.  This is all part of the journey.  If you live with other people, you might be shy to practice where they can hear you because whatever you play at this stage isn’t going to sound that great yet.  Maybe you will feel better with an electric guitar and a headphone amp, or you can find a quiet, comfortable place to practice in peace.

2. Commit yourself to at least three months of learning

Many people start learning the guitar and give up within the first couple of weeks because it’s not fun, their fingers hurt, song playing isn’t coming fast enough, everything sounds out of tune, and they are too busy to practice.  These feelings are temporary.  Most of these hurdles will disappear within three months if you practice regularly.  Just stick with it and once you’re over the beginner hump, everything will become much more enjoyable.

3. Have a goal

Learning the guitar is a never ending story so it’s a good idea to have a goal in mind when you first start playing.  This will give you something to work toward.  Some goals can be as simple as just wanting to start a hobby and relax or learn a particular song, write your own music, or have ambitions to play in a band.  Whatever that goal is, make it something that motivates you when you are not in the mood to pick up the guitar.

A Good Guitar Teacher Goes a Long Way!

If you keep these three steps in mind, learning to play won’t be so daunting.  It can be overwhelming to learn because there is so much information out there about the guitar.  One thing to keep in mind, make sure you find a great guitar teacher to help guide you along.  Once you have found a person who understands what your guitar goals are, they will be responsible for guiding you and helping you stay on the path toward greatness.
