Back to school: Start with lessons

Any time of year is a great time to learn something new.  But fall is a great time to start learning.  September always announces the beginning of the new school year, rebirth of learning, and a time when everything starts again.  Therefore, fall is a great time to learn to play the guitar.

If you are an adult just beginning to learn or a parent with a child who has expressed an interest, it’s a great time to get started.  The key to finding balance in your life is to add something new to your routine and to find a great instructor who can help learning seamless and fun.

It is crucial to research and find a teacher you are comfortable with

Having someone you trust to teach you or your child how to play is the most important component to learning anything.  You need someone qualified and capable.  It is also important to understand what you will be learning and to what extent the teacher can guide you for you to become a good player.

A teacher that can play or player that can teach

Finding an instructor that is also a player is very important, but finding a player who can also teach is more important.  Many people can play, and play well, but it doesn’t mean they can teach well.  Read reviews and get recommendations.

What you will be taught is based on each instructor and the capability of each student, but most lessons include learning components of the guitar (how it is made, names of the parts, names of strings and how to tune).  You should also be learning basic chords and basic strumming patterns as well as music theory.

One on one

Taking lessons with an instructor who will teach you one-on-one rather than a group setting is a great way for you to stay focused and for the teacher to understand your strengths and weaknesses, your interests, and genres of music that you want to learn.

Not only is it important to find the right teacher for you, but it is also important to make the time for lessons and practice.  You can squeeze in a half hour each week for lessons but if you aren’t taking the time to practice, you are going to have a tough time learning anything.  Therefore, fall is a great time to start learning.

Your schedule

You are most likely developing a new schedule as the new school year gets started so it may be easier to add lessons and practice into that schedule instead of trying to make time for it later after your fall schedule is already established.
