So, you want to take guitar lessons? You just don’t know where to start or what instructor to go with. We’re here to make it easy! When you begin guitar lessons it is important that you find the right instructor. This is the first and most important step. The next is actually showing up, learning and practicing, but that’s all on you.
The reason why it is so important to find the right instructor is that, if you don’t know anything about the guitar, you need someone to teach you who is well versed in the subject. You also need to find someone who will listen to you. You need to be able to express what type of music you are interested in so that your instructor will teach you with music that is going to keep you engaged. If you want to learn how to play in the genre of rock but your instructor is teaching you classical, you are going to lose interest very quickly.
A qualified instructor will not only have had a quality education, but they will also know how to play well AND teach well. The two are not the same. Some instructors can play magnificently but have no actual skill in teaching. And others can teach well but cannot play the guitar and this is going to lead to very boring lessons. Believe it or not, both of these scenarios exist.
When you research an instructor, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to do so. You want to make sure you are finding the right teacher for you and trust us; an instructor doesn’t take it personally if you don’t find them to be the right fit for you. If they do get upset, then they really aren’t the teacher for you!
Ask your potential teacher how long they’ve been teaching, where they went to school, what they have achieved on a musical level, and how they teach. Some instructors don’t believe in teaching music theory, for example, while others find it absolutely necessary in order to progress as an artist. That is entirely up to you but if you learn to play guitar the right way, you are going to end up being more versed in the guitar in the long run.
