Keep Playing The Guitar!
Don’t give up on the guitar. Your guitar teacher is begging you.
Every holiday, thousands of teenagers tear gift-wrap paper off shiny, new guitars. They happily pluck at the un-tuned strings, excited to start learning and dreaming of how cool they are going to be once they are rock stars. Sadly, most will give up before they even get to jam out one riff. For them, it’s no big deal to shove the guitar to the back of the closet in favor of the latest version of PlayStation. But this is a big deal for guitar teachers in Northeast Philadelphia and they want you to at least try to learn.
Beginning players, whether they are flighty teens or busy adults, have always quit the guitar at high rates. Why is this? The guitar is a great instrument to learn and isn’t that hard if you receive the proper training. Maybe that is the key. While a teen is excited to get that beautiful new guitar, are the parents getting them lessons so they can actually learn to play it? Perhaps this is where the failure and disconnect lies. For the adults, the same can be held true. Finding the time can also be a major separation of learning as well.
Guitar teachers want you to know that while receiving a new guitar is awesome, it’s really not the first step at all in learning to play. Having a new toy is awesome but if you don’t know how to use it, what good is it really? The guitar is the same way. Even guitar players who know the basics of playing have to learn to use a new guitar so why should you be any different? Learning to play is the first step in becoming a guitar player. Whether you have the guitar first or not doesn’t make a difference. Learning is the key here.
Whether you are a photographer, web developer, or mechanic, you can’t learn without a camera, computer or car, respectively. However, you can’t be a photographer, web developer or mechanic unless you first learn. Whether you learn with your own device, a borrowed one or a used one, the key is that you first must learn. Educating yourself on the guitar: how it works, history, music theory, etc. is the only way you are going to learn. This, in turn, will make receiving that brand new guitar all the more victorious.
Taking guitar lessons is the best way to really know if the guitar is the right instrument for you. You will gain a true understanding of music and learn to respect the guitar, not just hold it as a shiny new toy. Guitar teachers all across America want parents to understand that while buying your child that new guitar they asked for is a step in the right direction, getting them lessons is the key to them actually using it.
