Techniques of the guitar

Learn guitar technique in Philadelphia

There are many aspects of learning the guitar. Making sure you have the techniques down, or are at least working on them, is going to make you play better. When it comes to learning these techniques, you may already be working with a guitar teacher. If they are good, you should be learning these techniques throughout your Philadelphia guitar lessons. If you want to play a cleaner guitar, eliminate sloppy playing and string noise, there are ways to improve your guitar technique.

Concentrating on articulation and awareness in your guitar playing are two ways to improve your technique. Let’s explain:

Articulation

Articulation in music refers to clarity in the production of successive notes. One technique in guitar playing is that your notes are clear and precise. This is something you will learn over time and you must continue to practice in order to achieve this articulation. It requires picking each note simultaneously or “clean.” When you practice, play with a clean guitar tone and do not use distorting effects so that you can clearly hear what you are doing wrong or right. Play loud enough so that you can pick up any imperfections in your playing. Go slow and truly listen to what you are doing. You will not improve your technique any other way.

Awareness

In order to better your technique, you must be aware of the imperfections. Many players don’t sense they are doing anything wrong and therefore cannot pinpoint their specific guitar technique problems. There are two ways you can acknowledge what is going on: record yourself playing and/or work with a guitar teacher. If you record yourself, listen to your playback slowly and clearly. You can easily identify any unclear notes, excess string noises or scratchy noises. The only problem with recording yourself is that you may not pick up on everything. This is why working with a guitar teacher may be your best chance to perfect your technique. A good guitar teacher will help you to play guitar cleaner but telling you what to do as well as being able to hear the problems you may not be hearing yourself. Either way you choose, focusing on awareness will bring your technique to new heights.

It is very important to understand that you can improve your technique. It won’t happen overnight but with consistent practice, patience and guidance, you will improve. As with every musical instrument, practicing and learning are the only things that are going to help you grow as an artist. Finding the right teacher to show you proper technique is a step in the right direction. While you are learning from your instructor, practice is the other part of making your technique better. Don’t forget to practice patience because without it you are only going to get frustrated!
