Guitar and music education

Most of us who choose to learn the guitar found a passion for it at an early age. We may have been inspired by great legends, a music teacher or even a friend. You may have people in your life you share similar tastes in music with and have wonderful conversations about it. Having a love for the guitar can start at any age, deciding to go forward and learn is a different story completely. No matter what age you are, it’s never too late (or early) to learn. Taking guitar lessons in Northeast Philadelphia is a great way to get started.

When you decide to go for it and take lessons, many teachers will start right away with music education before you even pick up the guitar. People will tell you that everything you need to learn you can teach yourself rather than taking structured lessons. When you get older, however, you realize that time is precious and the biggest problem with trying to discover everything by yourself is that it just takes too long. We only have one lifetime in which to achieve our goals and to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Time

Considering the time available to us then, how can it be a good thing to spend months “discovering” something basic that an educated mentor could teach you in an hour? That lesson would then allow you to spend months mastering, using and building on your newfound knowledge. This is making good use of limited time.

Go it alone

In theory, you can learn anything you need to know by yourself. However, with no guidance or feedback, it’s highly unlikely that you will be able to compete with your contemporaries who are busy learning efficiently, receiving expert advice from teachers and learning music theory. On top of that, music is not something that should take place in isolation. You need to get out there and mingle with other musicians. This gives you the chance to build networks, exchange ideas, jam, get involved in projects and to be inspired by other people.

Embrace learning

For some people, it may be appealing to stay away from music education because they believe that they are a great undiscovered talent, but this isn’t going to work. By opening yourself up to music education you are allowing yourself to end the frustration of constantly hitting a brick wall with your playing. Your technique issues can be fixed and your musical vocabulary can be expanded.

We are all talented in different ways. How we get there is the journey. Without musical education, it is hard to surmise just how talented you can become. Whatever your interests and aspirations are, your natural talents are just the starting point. You will need help to nurture and develop your talents. Few, if any, can do this alone. Embrace taking guitar lessons in Northeast Philadelphia and learn from others who have already made the journey and the mistakes along with it.
