Reasons to play guitar

reasons-to-play-the-guitar

There are so many reasons why anyone wants to pick up an instrument and learn to play.  For those who simply have a great love of music, it’s normal to want to make some of that music on your own.  The guitar is a great instrument to learn.  It’s versatile, beautiful and a lot of fun.

Here are so more reasons why you should learn to play the guitar:

Some of the most famous musical artists play guitar

There are so many famous artists who play guitar, and the list could go on forever.    Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Taylor Swift play guitar.  So many genres, in so many ways.  The guitar is just that cool.  Artists who have an incredible singing ability and don’t need to know an instrument, do in fact, play.  The reasonings are numerous but a lot of singers/songwriters use the guitar when they are writing songs.  It’s easy to use and tote along when an idea comes to them.

Playing the guitar is cool

Whether or not a guitar player is a cool person is irrelevant.  What makes them cool is that they can play guitar.  It’s like a rite of passage to attach cool to your name if you can play guitar (and play it well).  Over the years we have been exposed to so much great music from so many great guitarists that there is a mysticism around the guitar for those you can’t play.  That’s what makes them cool.

So many resources to learn

One thing that perpetuates the popularity of guitar is its own popularity.  Over the years as guitar skills have been sought after by so many people there are now thousands of different resources that exist.  Resources include books, video, and most importantly great guitar teachers.  This means that it’s easier to learn guitar than other instruments because there are so many resources available to you.

Guitars are portable

One advantage the guitar has over the piano, the harp, the cello, and even the tuba, is that the guitar is very portable.  You can still take your guitar as a carry-on item on many flights even today.  For street performers, this makes the guitar extremely appealing, which over the years performers have had to find other ways to differentiate themselves.  In the 70s and 80s where the guitar’s popularity soared, the guitar’s shape and size made it an easy instrument to pack around for a roaming band.

There are many more reasons why the guitar is such a great instrument to learn and play.  Once you start learning, you will come up with many of your own reasons.  Finding a great guitar teacher can help you learn and appreciate the instrument.  It can also motivate you, hold you accountable, and help you get good.
