Take Lessons – Learn Guitar

What to expect from guitar lessons

guitar-lessons-for-everyone

If you are just getting started with the guitar and are considering lessons, you may be wondering what to expect.  If you have already found a suitable teacher with considerable experience and skills, you will be in good hands.  Assuming, of course, that you have researched and found a good instructor. If you reside in Philadelphia, David Joel is one of the best, Berkley-trained guitar instructors you will find!

One of the more beneficial things about lessons is the time with the teacher, being able to ask questions, and getting constructive criticism.  But there are other things you can expect to learn:

  • Basic chords
  • Strumming
  • Tablature
  • Tuning
  • Read Music
  • Basic Techniques

A good teacher can also help you learn to hold the guitar and even hold the pick.  There are many advantages to guitar lessons as a beginner.

Your first lesson

Normally your first lesson will begin with the teacher introducing you to some simple finger exercises, placement, and how to tune your guitar.  It takes time to get comfortable with the guitar so you will get advice on how to hold the instrument as well.  Be prepared for sore fingers for a little while!

Future lessons

After you begin to develop a relationship with your instructor, they can then really get to know how you learn and what type of music you are interested in learning.  From there, you will learn chords, notes, and your first song!

Should you take lessons?

This question can be difficult to answer as everyone is different.  Only you can decide if lessons are right for you or if you can do it by yourself.  To come to the right conclusion, you will need to ask yourself a few questions.

  • Am I good at learning?
  • Am I good at teaching myself?
  • Can I organize lessons for myself?
  • Can I perform good research to get answers and form lessons?

You are here reading this article, so perhaps you have the research part down.  Maybe you only need lessons for certain learning, but not all of it.  Not everyone requires instruction to learn all parts of the guitar.  There are some areas that you can probably work out on your own.

When starting as a complete beginner, lessons are probably the best way to get started.  Seeking help in the beginning is crucial so that you avoid learning bad habits that may be hard to break later.

The main benefit to a lot of new players is that lessons are fairly inexpensive.  Yes, doing it yourself is less expensive, even free sometimes, but how good is the free instruction that you are learning?  Putting in the investment in the beginning will be well worth it in the end.  The cost of taking lessons will be well worth it to get good at learning how to play the guitar.

In Philadelphia, the David Joel Guitar Studio has been teaching students of all ages for decades.  Whether in person or online, get in touch today and learn what good lessons are like.
