Before You Learn Guitar
Get some advice before you learn to play the guitar
It’s so great that you want to learn to play the guitar! Find a great guitar teacher in Philadelphia and get started! But, before you do, be advised that there is information you will be given by potential teachers or people in general. You may start to doubt yourself or even stop making time for practice. If you can avoid or work through these pitfalls, you are going to become a better and stronger guitar player.
Before you begin taking lessons, read on to understand some of the pitfalls you should avoid.
1. Don’t listen to the advice of the unqualified
Be careful whom you believe, especially on the Internet and especially from people who have no business giving you advice about guitar in the first place. People mean well, but sometimes they just get it wrong. If you have questions, write them down and ask a qualified guitar instructor to help you. A qualified and trained teacher will be able to steer you in the right direction about anything guitar related.
2. Don’t doubt yourself
Don’t drown yourself in self-consciousness and doubt. When you start to doubt your playing capabilities you will start to become self-conscious, very quickly. Anyone can learn the guitar so tell yourself that you are going to do it and that you are going to do it well! Once you have this mind set, the sky is the limit for you and your guitar playing ability.
3. Make time to practice
It is important to dedicate as much time as you can to playing and practicing, especially in the beginning. If you avoid practice, you aren’t going to make any progress. All this is going to do is deter you from continuing. When you don’t take the time to play, you aren’t really learning anything other than what your teacher is showing you at lesson time. By the time you have the next lesson, you will have already forgotten what you were taught and you are right back at the beginning.
4. Do your research
Don’t just hire anyone to teach you guitar. Make sure you are going to a qualified instructor and preferably one who gives private lessons. Why? Because a private tutor has the time to focus on just you and your abilities. He or she will know what your strengths and weaknesses are and will be able to cater your lesson to your goals to help you achieve them. Make sure they were trained well. Someone who knows how to jam on the guitar is not necessarily someone who can sit down and actually teach what they know. It’s important to understand this so that you can achieve your goals.
