The Benefits of Music Lessons for Children and Young Adults

Benefits of Guitar Lessons in Philly

Between academics and sports, your children’s lives are pretty hectic. Sports are great for keeping them active. It teaches them about sportsmanship and having an activity they will hopefully continue to do. But creatively, you want to make sure they are using other talents to keep them engaged and entertained. Think about music lessons, especially if their school has taken the music program out of their curricular. Philadelphia is known for its rich musical history.  Taking Guitar lessons  can be a very good choice to channel energy and get those creative juices flowing.

They may not be the next Mozart or Elvis, but learning an instrument may just help them learn math, practicing patience and finding a rhythm all their own. There are tons of benefits to a music education. Here are some:

Advancing academically

Learning to read music involves math. When they learn to understand beat, rhythm, and scales, they are learning how to divide and recognize patterns. It also helps with their memory skills. By learning a song, they are remembering from their short-term memory. By remembering that song, they are storing it in their long-term memory. This helps improve memory skills.

Learning social skills

Learning an instrument can give a child an outlet in which to communicate with other children, therefore building on their social skills. Finding something they are interested in, they will want to discuss those passions with others.

Developing confidence

Lessons help a child learn to accept constructive criticism. Turning that criticism into improvement when they play helps build their self-confidence. Of course, if they improve and ultimately get good at their instrument, their confidence goes through the roof.

Learning patience and discipline

Learning an instrument such as the guitar requires a lot of patience and understanding. Before you can even play, you must learn how to read music, how to hold the guitar and where to place your fingers. They learn that you cannot simply jump into playing without first understand the how’s and why’s. This teaches them an important lesson in patience and discipline combined.

Having something all their own

Playing an instrument may just give your child an outlet that no one else is doing. It makes them special. If they excel at it, they have created a niche for themselves that is all their own. They feel wondrous and as if they have a sense of purpose. They carry their instrument with pride and the knowledge of knowing they are doing something most people can’t.

If your child is interested in learning a musical instrument, allow them to decide which instrument they think they may want to play. Make sure it’s a smart investment, budget-wise. Many music teachers agree that you can’t go wrong with piano, percussion instruments, violin, recorder and especially guitar.
