How many guitar lessons do I need?

A common question usually asked by guitar beginners is “how many guitar lessons do I need?  There are no shortcuts to becoming a great musician, it takes hard work and dedication.  How long that takes varies from person to person.

On average, most beginners will need 3 months of guitar lessons once a week.  After those first 3 months, they can reevaluate their needs.  They can either change the lesson frequency or stop completely.  It really depends on the progress and how each person absorbs the teachings.

It would be fantastic if we could all be prodigies and instantly master any skill, we put our minds to.  Unfortunately, that’s not how it works for most of us.  Learning an instrument is a process that takes time, patience, and a lot of practice.

How long before I can play guitar?

How long it will take you to learn depends on several factors such as your level of commitment, how often you practice, the quality of your guitar instruction, and your natural ability.  Most people will benefit from taking at least one guitar lesson each week, for 3 to 6 months.  This will give you a chance to learn the basics but also develop good techniques and start playing simple songs.  After 6 months, you should be able to play some intermediate-level parts and have a good foundation for continued learning.

Balance & Progression

It’s important to find a balance that works for you.  If you’re taking too many guitar lessons, you may get overwhelmed and end up quitting.  But, if you’re not taking enough lessons, you might not make the progress you want.  The best way to find out how many lessons you will need is to talk to your teacher.  They will be able to assess your skill level and give you a better idea of how often you should be taking lessons.

Benefits of Guitar Lessons

There are many benefits to taking guitar lessons on a regular basis, even if you’re an experienced player.  Attending weekly guitar lessons can help you progress faster, develop good practice habits, and get feedback from a qualified instructor.

Weekly guitar lessons provide structure and accountability.  This can help you make faster progress and retain information you’ve learned the previous week.  If you’re serious about learning the guitar, we recommend taking one lesson per week for 6 months.  After that, you can reevaluate your needs and continue taking lessons as often as you like.

Create Goals for Learning Guitar

No matter how many guitar lessons you are taking, or how much time you can devote to practice each week, make the most of it.  Not everyone gets it right away and that’s okay.  Just make sure that you are setting goals for yourself and that you are reaching milestones every quarter.  Before you know it, you will be playing your favorite songs.

For effective lessons from an outstanding teacher, consider lessons from the David Joel Guitar Studio.  With one on one lessons either in person or virtually, you will learn the techniques and skills needed to learn the guitar from an experienced and patient instructor.
